Georgia State Student Jennifer Wang Interns at Georgia's Capitol
Georgia State University student Jennifer Wang is working as an intern at the Georgia General Assembly through the university's Georgia Legislative Intern Program (GLIP). Wang is a third-year Political Science major in the College of Arts and Sciences. Wang, from Tucker, said the internship is helping her study the ins and outs of the legal process. "First-hand experience of interning at the state capitol will help me decide if I want to work in state government," said Wang, who is an aspiring lawyer. As an intern, she works for the House Ethics Committee, Higher Education Committee, and State Properties Committee, helping with errands and aiding with administrative processes. Wang, a member of Georgia State's Japanese Student Association, plans to take the LSAT after graduating next year and plans to pursue a career as an immigration lawyer. GLIP is run by Amy Steigerwalt, Professor of Political Science at Georgia State. The College of Arts and Sciences provides a skills-based liberal arts and sciences education for Atlanta's diverse, next-generation workforce.

Georgia State University student Monisha Jackson recently co-authored the sociology textbook Alternative Urbanisms & Social Deviance. Jackson is a 3rd year Ph.D. student in the Sociology Department in the College of Arts & Sciences at Georgia State. The textbook, a collaboration between former and current M.A. and Ph.D. students from the Sociology Department, serves as a framework to view more clearly the fluidity and intersectionality of socially deviant labels and their consequences. Sociology professor Deirdre A. Oakley is using the textbook in her upper-level course, Deviant Behavior. Jackson is a Ph.D. student whose research was awarded first place by the National Geographical Society. Her current thesis focuses on queer women of color's experiences in LGBTQ+ night-time spaces. Georgia State University Ph.D. Student Xiulong Yang Presents Research at Computer Science Conference
Georgia State University Ph.D. student Xiulong Yang presented a research paper at the ICCV 2021 Conference in October. The conference focused on computer vision received a "record number of 6,236 submissions this year," according to Yang's advisor Dr. Johnathan Shihao Ji. Yang is pursuing a doctorate in Computer Science from the College of Arts & Sciences. His paper was titled "JEM++: Improved Techniques for Training JEM." Yang co-authored the paper with Ji, an associate professor of Computer Science, and presented it virtually. Georgia State University Ph.D. Student Wins International Research Foundation Grant
Georgia State University Ph.D. student Josh Sullivan has received The International Research Foundation for English Language Education's Doctor Dissertation Grant. Sullivan will use the grant money to fund research on how English Language Learners can benefit from improved English Language Teaching programs at Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs). Sullivan, a doctoral student in Applied Linguistics in the College of Arts & Sciences, is focusing his research on improving the experiences of English Language Learners at HBCUs. The Phi Chi Theta Atlanta Alumni Chapter Scholarship is given to an undergraduate student who demonstrates a 3.0-grade point average or a graduate student with a 3.25-grade point average at RCB.
