Georgia State University

The George M. Sparks awards recognize Georgia State's unsung heroes: faculty, staff, and students who exemplify a willingness to go the extra mile with good humor and perseverance. These were the characteristics of one of the university's most highly regarded presidents, Dr. George McIntosh Sparks, who served from 1928 to 1957. A university committee that includes past Sparks Award recipients selects the winners based on the information submitted. Faculty and staff nominees must be full-time employees who have been associated with Georgia State or Perimeter College for at least five years.

The Outer Barristers' Guild Award was established to recognize the top ten first-year students and encourage superior academic achievement at the Georgia State University College of Law.

The Chemistry Doctoral Gold Award is awarded to doctoral chemistry students based on the quality of research they have presented.

The Robert "Pete" Pullen Jr. Scholarship in Analytical Chemistry is awarded to M.S. or Ph.D. level students who are pursuing or intend to pursue a degree in chemistry with a specialization in analytical chemistry.

The Harry P. Hopkins Jr. Scholarship endowment was established to honor the legacy of Harry P. Hopkins Jr. and his interest in physical chemistry. The fund supports graduate-level scholarship in physical chemistry.

The David W. Boykin Graduate Fellowship in Medicinal Chemistry was established in 1999 to honor the former chair of the Department of Chemistry. It is awarded to an outstanding Ph.D. student in medicinal chemistry.

The Bradford Scott Beerman Memorial Scholarship is awarded to rising senior chemistry majors with demonstrated financial need and a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Named for a former professor in the Department of Chemistry, the Ambrose H. Pendergrast Fellowship is awarded to an outstanding doctoral student in the area of medicinal chemistry/biochemistry.

The Al Baumstark Award in Chemistry supports undergraduate chemistry students conducting research in their junior or senior year, especially students who plan to pursue graduate school.

The Robert H. Hankla Endowment Award provides support for outstanding seniors majoring in physics. The scholarship was created by the family of Robert H. Hankla in his honor. Hankla was an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy for 30 years and assistant dean and director of graduate studies in the College for ten years.

The Robert L. Blakely Endowed Scholarship in Anthropology recognizes an anthropology senior who shows strong potential in the field. It was established in memory of Blakely, a former Georgia State anthropology professor, and his contribution to anthropology education.

The Mildred W. Seydel Scholarship is given to journalism students based on scholarship, dedication to the profession, and leadership qualities. This scholarship was established by the family of the late Mildred W. Seydel, an outstanding journalist, civic leader, author, and feminist.

The Faculty Recognition Award is presented to graduating respiratory therapy students who, in the opinion of the faculty, exhibit a positive professional attitude and a willingness to serve the needs of classmates, the community, and the profession of respiratory therapy.

The Professional Merit Award is presented to the student or students who has/have most actively participated in professional activities within the community and who demonstrates high standards of professionalism.

This award recognizes the students who have made an outstanding contribution to the research efforts of the Department of Physical Therapy and who exhibit potential of becoming significant contributors to the field of physical therapy research.

The Keystone Award is given to a student or students who, through example, maintain the structure and integrity of the class. Awardees demonstrate a strong commitment to the physical therapy profession, are avid patient advocates, and are respected by faculty and peers.

This award is given to the individual in the Department of Physical Therapy who provides ongoing, dynamic leadership and guidance to his or her class.

In memory of Dr. Virgil Jacobs, former anatomist in the physical therapy program, this award is given to the student who best exemplifies the qualities of intelligence, compassion, fairness, honesty, and sincerity in addition to outstanding scholarly anatomical competence.

The Gordon Seagraves Cummings Scholarship/Award recognizes individuals who are both critical thinkers and caring, competent practitioners -- characteristics personified by Professor Gordon Cummings.

This award is given to graduating students with a grade point average of 4.0 in the physical therapy program.
