Clay Voytek, a senior majoring in journalism and media entrepreneurship, was thanked and included in the acknowledgements of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson's latest book, "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents." Rogers worked as a fact-checker on the book, which was published on Aug. 4. The book, which examines America's lingering, artificial class system, was named an Oprah's Book Club Pick and "an instant American classic" by The New York Times. Wilkerson is also the author of The New York Times bestseller "The Warmth of Other Suns," which focused on a period of American history between the early and mid-1900s, known as The Great Migration, when millions of African Americans moved north and west from the rural South.

Thanks to an anonymous donor, the English Department awards five annual scholarships designed to support the purchase of books for the following year. The award honors the spirit and legacy of Frantz Fanon-a writer, philosopher, and revolutionary whose work continues to shape contemporary studies in literature, culture, and politics. The scholarship celebrates Georgia State University's students of African-American origin, but students of all ethnicities are invited to apply.

Global Engagement Award from the Office of International Initiatives
Kelsi Quick, an undergraduate studying political science at Georgia State University, has won two research awards at the GSU Undergraduate Research Conference (GSURC) for her paper entitled, "Double Standards? Approval Ratings of Male and Female Prime Ministers During National Security Crises." She was honored during the Spring 2020 semester by the College of Arts & Sciences for earning both awards during the 2019-20 academic year. Quick was awarded the first place Global Engagement Award from the Office of International Initiatives (OII) and second place in Social & Behavioral Sciences. The OII award is a new award that recognizes outstanding presentations on research or creative work addressing global or international issues. Ms. Quick won against 180 other student participants during the 14th annual GSURC, which took a virtual format in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The research she presented is a result of two years of work under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Ryan Carlin.
