Ayse Lokmanoglu, a Ph.D.candidate in the Department of Communication at Georgia State University, publiished a research article in the journal Studies in Conflict and Terrorism. The name of the article is "Coin as Imagined Sovereignty: A Rhetorical Analysis of Coins as a Transhistorical Artifact and an Ideograph in Islamic State's Communication."

Astronomy Ph.D. student Beena Meena has won the first place in the Georgia State University Doctoral Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. It is a research communication competition which helps to develop academic, presentation and research communication skills. It supports the development of students' capacities to effectively explain their research in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience. Graduate students have three minutes to present compelling orations on their thesis or dissertation topics and their significance. Meena won the top award for her video description of her doctoral dissertation: "Role of Supermassive Black Holes Winds in Galaxy Evolution."

Sarah Bramblett, an English Rhetoric & Composition Ph.D. student at Georgia State University, placed second in the Three Minute Thesis doctoral competition. Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a research communication competition which helps to develop academic, presentation and research communication skills. It supports the development of students' capacities to effectively explain their research in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience.

Udagamage Kushan Wijewardena, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Georgia State University, was named International Graduate Student of the Year. Since 2012, the International Education Awards have recognized outstanding faculty, staff and students for their commitment to international education. Awards are given during the annual International Honorary Reception during International Education Week in November. In 2018, the Sheth Awards were established to recognize one distinguished faculty member and one exceptional international alum for their achievements.

Two students in the Georgia State University Doctor of Physical Therapy Class of 2020 received top scores on the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE), 800 out of 800. In addition, the entire class received a rare 100 percent first-time pass rate on the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE).

The book, which examines America's lingering, artificial class system, was named an Oprah's Book Club Pick and "an instant American classic" by The New York Times. Wilkerson is also the author of The New York Times bestseller "The Warmth of Other Suns," which focused on a period of American history between the early and mid-1900s, known as The Great Migration, when millions of African Americans moved north and west from the rural South.

A Spring 2020 graduate of the Honors College at Georgia State University has been named the Andrew Goodman Foundation Ambassador of the Year for 2020.

Sean Zigah, a master's student studying geosciences at Georgia State University, was awarded a competitive $1,000 travel grant from the The Clay Minerals Society to present his research at their October meeting taking place at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

Faisal Adams, a master's student majoring in geosciences at Georgia State University, will start his Ph.D. program in Geochemistry at Virginia Tech this fall. Faisal accepted the prestigious "Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Program" fellowship from Virginia Tech Center for Sustainable Nanotechnology.

Fariha Hossain, an undergraduate studying English, won the Eleanor M. Pratt Endowment for English Majors. The award honors the legacy of Eleanor Mary Pratt, who had a deep love of literature, the English language, and the fine arts. Each year, the English Department awards scholarships to students for whom the study or writing or literature has made a significant impact. Candidates are nominated by faculty and nominations are reviewed by the English Department's Undergraduate Committee.

Lindsey Baker, a graduate student studying English at Georgia State University, won the Paul Bowles Graduate Student Fellowship in Fiction Writing. The award, presented in honor of the novelist, composer, and translator Paul Bowles, is presented by the English Department to acknowledge outstanding work by an M.F.A or Ph.D. student specializing in fiction writing.

English Department doctoral graduate Alan Swirsky was awarded the 2019-2020 Graduate Writing Award by the department. Each year, English Department faculty serving on the Awards Committee conduct a blind review of top essays, nominated by department instructors and professors, from courses at all levels.

Wanjiku Ngugi, a graduate student studying English at Georgia State University, won the Virginia Spencer Carr Graduate Fellowship in Prose Writing. The award is named in honor of the great literary biographer and professor Virginia Spencer Carr.

Carlye Anne Schock, an doctoral student studying English at Georgia State University, was awarded the Wade Family Endowment. The endowment was established in honor of alums Rodney D. Wade (B.A. in English Literature) and Randy A. Wade (B.A. in Political Science), to provide support for students in the departments of English and Political Science.

Fariha Hossain, a senior studying English at Georgia State University, was awarded the Frantz Fanon Book Award. Thanks to an anonymous donor, the English Department awards five annual scholarships designed to support the purchase of books for the following year. The award honors the spirit and legacy of Frantz Fanon-a writer, philosopher, and revolutionary whose work continues to shape contemporary studies in literature, culture, and politics. The scholarship celebrates Georgia State University's students of African-American origin, but students of all ethnicities are invited to apply.

Evan Fullerton, a doctoral student studying neuroscience at Georgia State University, has received a 2019-2020 Molecular Basis of Disease (MBD) Outstanding Fellow Award. This award is accorded on the basis of outstanding contributions to research, future promise as a researcher, and originality, imagination and significance of research.

Deborah Gulledge, a doctoral student studying astronomy at Georgia State University, has been awarded an Air Force Research Laboratory DE Scholarship to work as a summer intern at the Air Force's AMOS site on Maui, HI. The Air Force pays a stipend and covers all travel and accommodation costs.

India Jackson, a doctroral student studying physics at Georgia State University, was appointed as a member of the U.S. delegation to the 7th International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) International Conference on Women in Physics. The international conference has been rescheduled for July 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Cora Rowe, a graduate student studying English at Georgia State University, won the Virginia Spencer Carr Graduate Fellowship in Prose Writing during Spring semester 2020 at Georgia State University. The award is named in honor of the great literary biographer and professor Virginia Spencer Carr.

Kelsi Quick, an undergraduate studying political science at Georgia State University, has won two research awards at the GSU Undergraduate Research Conference (GSURC) for her paper entitled, "Double Standards? Approval Ratings of Male and Female Prime Ministers During National Security Crises." She was honored during the Spring 2020 semester by the College of Arts & Sciences for earning both awards during the 2019-20 academic year. Quick was awarded the first place Global Engagement Award from the Office of International Initiatives (OII) and second place in Social & Behavioral Sciences. The OII award is a new award that recognizes outstanding presentations on research or creative work addressing global or international issues. Ms. Quick won against 180 other student participants during the 14th annual GSURC, which took a virtual format in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The research she presented is a result of two years of work under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Ryan Carlin.
