Timothy John Bartness Memorial Award
The Timothy Jon Bartness Memorial Award was established in memory of Dr. Timothy Jon Bartness (1953-2015) who joined the Biology faculty in 1988. Dr. Bartness was a Regents' Professor and founding director of the Center for Obesity Reversal. He was internationally celebrated for his research on obesity and metabolic physiology in addition to mentoring young scientists.

Deja Milton Receives Eleanor McEdwards International Opportunity Scholarship
Georgia State University student Deja Milton was awarded The Eleanor McEdwards International Opportunity Award. Milton, of Decatur, is a Psychology major in the College of Arts & Sciences. The Eleanor McEdwards International Opportunity Scholarship is a study abroad scholarship awarded annually to an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in the College of Arts and Sciences. The scholarship was established by Dr. Colleen McEdwards and Scott Burnside in honor of her mother, Eleanor McEdwards, who was dedicated to creating and promoting opportunities for international travel and study among young people. Because of Eleanor's dedication, Dr. McEdwards was able to participate in study abroad programs throughout the former Soviet Union, and then went on to become an anchor and correspondent for CNN International.

Georgia State University student Meklit Gebru has been selected for the Donald M. Payne Fellowship. The Payne Fellowship provides up to $22,000 annually towards tuition and mandatory fees for completion of a two-year master's program in international affairs or a related subject at an approved graduate school. In addition, there is a stipend, up to $16,000 per year, for each of the two years of graduate study, to help pay living expenses, books, and travel while in school under the Payne Fellowship.

Georgia State Political Science Student Eric Edmonson Serves as Intern at State Capitol
Eric Edmonson, a junior political science major at Georgia State University, served as an intern at the state capitol during the 2019 session of the Georgia General Assembly. Edmonson, of Buford, GA, felt that the Georgia Legislative Internship Program (GLIP) "was a unique opportunity that very few get to participate in." Eric hoped that GLIP "would make him stand out from his peers" and give him a greater chance at achieving greatness in future career plans. After graduation, Eric plans to attend law school and eventually become an attorney and business owner. He is inspired by the quote "success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it," by Henry David Thoreau. His favorite book is "Memoirs of the Second World War," by Winston Churchill
