IDEAL at GSU Student working with MARTA for internship this Summer
Hassan Davis is working this summer with 23 East Communications Group and MARTA to support their social media, communications, and outreach initiatives while putting his production and post-production skills to work. Hassan completed the 2-year Inclusive Digital Expression and Literacy (IDEAL) Program in Spring 2024 and will continue to take classes at Georgia Statenext year. Hassan is a skilled video editor, a lover of trains, and a natural on camera.

Georgia State University student Caleb Spainhour worked recently as an intern at the Georgia General Assembly through the university's Georgia Legislative Intern Program (GLIP). Spainhour, of Nicholasville, Ky., is a third year Law and Society Interdisciplinary Studies student in the College of Arts and Sciences. Caleb hopes to attend law school in the future, and believes that his GLIP placement will help him gain relevant experience in his career path. As an intern, Spainhour's responsibilities included researching proposed policies and legislation in neighboring states, compiling reports on bills, and keeping an eye out for concerns of other members. Spainhour said he was excited by "the networking opportunities that are found nowhere else in Georgia." The College of Arts and Sciences provides a skills-based liberal arts and sciences education for Atlanta's diverse, next-generation workforce.

Rejuvenation of Dying Lake
As a part of its efforts to ensure environmental sustainability, Surya Sekhar Pal led a team of the Biocon Foundation which has brought back to life the dying 35-acre Hebbagodi Lake in the Indian state of Karnataka, leading to a significant improvement in the water quality and the return of flora and fauna. The plantlets were planted and trees were painted with bi-color straps of orange and yellow in order to prevent cracking and splitting of barks and prevent growing of diseases, fungus and insects. It bought restoration of the Lake and also rejuvenation of the aquatic ecosystem.

Georgia State Student Muskaan Patel Interns at Georgia's Capitol
Georgia State University student Muskaan Patel is working as an intern at the Georgia General Assembly through the university's Georgia Legislative Intern Program (GLIP). Patel is a junior pre-law/criminal justice interdisciplinary studies major in the College of Arts and Sciences. Patel, from McDonough, said her top goal while interning is to learn the lawmaking process in real-time. "I consider myself lucky to be able to participate in GLIP because it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that only a few get," said Patel. As an intern, Patel is working for the House Ways and Means Committee where she assists with writing letters, greeting visitors, attending committee meetings, retrieving committee bills, and handling constituent issues. Patel plans to go to law school and one day own a law firm. In addition to interning, Muskaan works at her family-owned gas station and convenience store. GLIP is run by Amy Steigerwalt, Professor of Political Science at Georgia State. Georgia State University student Tanya Paniagua Zamora is working as an intern at the Georgia General Assembly through the university's Georgia Legislative Intern Program (GLIP). Zamora is a third-year law and society interdisciplinary studies major in the College of Arts and Sciences. She said she has always had an interest in the government process and has found her first few weeks in the program enlightening. "Not only do I get to witness how our state legislative process works, but I also get to be a part of it," Zamora said. As an intern, Zamora's duties include answering phone calls from constituents all over the state, handling special files, and assisting with administrative needs in the Speaker's Office. She also attends House floor sessions. After graduating from Georgia State, Zamora plans to attend law school. GLIP is run by Amy Steigerwalt, Professor of Political Science at Georgia State. Georgia State University student Jennifer Wang is working as an intern at the Georgia General Assembly through the university's Georgia Legislative Intern Program (GLIP). Wang is a third-year Political Science major in the College of Arts and Sciences. Wang, from Tucker, said the internship is helping her study the ins and outs of the legal process. "First-hand experience of interning at the state capitol will help me decide if I want to work in state government," said Wang, who is an aspiring lawyer. As an intern, she works for the House Ethics Committee, Higher Education Committee, and State Properties Committee, helping with errands and aiding with administrative processes. Wang, a member of Georgia State's Japanese Student Association, plans to take the LSAT after graduating next year and plans to pursue a career as an immigration lawyer. GLIP is run by Amy Steigerwalt, Professor of Political Science at Georgia State. Georgia State University student Madison Shaw is interning with the Georgia Legislative Internship Program (GLIP), which offers students the opportunity to intern full-time for Georgia legislators, committees, and staff. Shaw, of Canton, is a junior majoring in Political Science major at the College of Arts and Sciences. Shaw is interning in the Clerk's office where her duties include copying and distributing bills and resolutions and assisting legislators with administrative tasks. While interning at the Georgia Senate, Shaw has gotten to know legislators and lobbyists and become more familiar with government and legal affairs. She plans to use this experience as she prepares for a future career in civil law. Savage has been assigned to the Office of Legislative Counsel where her duties include preparing resolutions. Savage plans to attend law school with the goal of becoming a civil rights attorney or politician to help better the lives of others. Lopez, of Kennesaw, is a master's degree student in Political Science at The College of Arts and Sciences. Lopez graduated from Georgia State in Spring 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. Lopez has been assigned to the Senate Education and Youth Committee where her duties include creating agenda notices, meeting minutes and updates of bill summaries. Lopez plans to work for an organization that represents, protects and fights for human rights. Georgia State University Student Participates in the Georgia Legislative Internship Program
Georgia State University student Christopher Ridgeway interned at the state capitol under the Georgia Legislative Internship Program. Ridgeway, of LaGrange, is a political science major in the College of Arts & Sciences. The Georgia Legislative Internship Program assigns students to various House and Senate committees. Interns learn about the legislative process firsthand from inside the Gold Dome. In addition, interns learn more about how constituents are served and acquire marketable skills and professional work experience before graduation. "Each day is different and there is always something to do," said Ridgeway. "It truly is a learning experience and can change the way you view politics as a young adult." Ridgeway was assigned to House Media Services where his duties included preparing for committee hearings and press conferences and handling administrative tasks.

Georgia State University student Shaista Niazi interned at the state capitol under the Georgia Legislative Internship Program. Niazi, of Sugar Hill, is a political science major in the College of Arts & Sciences. The Georgia Legislative Internship Program assigns students to various House and Senate committees. Interns are allowed to learn about the legislative and policy process firsthand from inside the Gold Dome. In addition to gaining an inside view of the legislative process and how constituents are served, interns acquire marketable skills and professional work experience before graduation. Niazi said her goal was "to gain new knowledge and a different perspective in politics" through the program. Niazi was assigned to the State Institutions and Property Committee. Many of her duties included retrieving bills and resolutions, assisting with weekly newsletters, creating flyers, attending committee meetings, and helping to set up for events.

Maariz Kashem, a political science student at Georgia State University, served as an intern at the state capitol. Kashem, of Lawrenceville, GA, decided to apply to the Georgia Legislative Internship Program to gain knowledge of the inner workings of government and determine whether politics would be the right career path for him. On campus, Maariz is the Vice President of Secular Panthers and is a member of Model UN. In the immediate future, Kashem plans to graduate from Georgia State and get real-world work experience before deciding where to go career and graduate school wise.
