2017 Sep 5

Nia Kapitanova, a Spanish major of Villa Rica, has been awarded the Alonzo F. and Norris B. Herndon Human Rights Scholarship.

Alonzo F. and Norris B. Herndon exemplified the drive to be the best one can be, and at the same time, take care of others. Through Alonzo’s values of thrift, persistence, integrity, he succeeded as a barber, in real estate, and in insurance, founding the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, and becoming the first black millionaire. He also believed in advancing civil rights, founding the Niagara Movement in 1905 with W.E.B. Dubois and others. This movement was the precursor to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. After Alonzo’s death, Norris continued Atlanta Life’s success. Behind the scenes, he backed the Atlanta Student Movement in the early 1960s with financial and human resources. The Alonzo F. and Norris B. Herndon Human Rights Scholarship will be awarded to qualified Honors College students who are engaged in advancing human rights through scholarship, research, creative work, leadership, or community service.
