Lashanah Thomas Accepts Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award for Georgia State's Black Student Alliance

2017 Jan 23

Georgia State University student Lashanah Thomas, of Atlanta, was one of three students who accepted the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award on behalf of the university's Black Student Alliance on Jan. 19, 2017.

The award was presented to the representatives of the student organization at the university's Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration. Thomas is majoring in History.

The humanitarian award is presented to an exemplary student or student organization who has demonstrated an outstanding ability to promote multiculturalism at Georgia State University and/or the community at large.

Georgia State's Black Student Alliance is one of the leading organizations on campus that truly makes an impact in several dimensions of Georgia State's student life experience.

Commonly referred to as BSA, it is one of the university's larger student organizations that seeks to break the cultural barriers between race and ethnicity in order to connect people of the Africa Diaspora. Their mission is to promote personal and professional development, as well as academic growth among the student body.

BSA collaborates with other student organizations and departments in reaching their mission. The group achieves its goals by hosting a consistent stream of programming throughout the semester.

Programs include Artists for Change where students and community members come together to showcase their talents through a conscious lens; the Power of Students Institute where students are gathered to dialogue about relevant issues and a plan of action for change; and educational weekly general body meetings that timely address subjects connected to the experiences and journeys of people of color.

Every semester, BSA's membership grows and their leadership thrives as they serve the campus in producing a catalog of memorable events and education. The BSA will continue to promote unity, enhance self-appreciation and cultural awareness - uplifting a legacy in the shadows of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other notable Americans committed to the promise of social justice.

The entire team accepting the award on behalf of the organization included Ivie Osaghae, Leeya Bridges and Lashanah Thomas.
