Ikram Awad Recognized for Achievements in the Georgia State University Student Government Association

2017 Jun 5

Ikram Awad of Riverdale, who served in the Georgia State University Student Government Association (SGA) during the 2016-17 academic year, was recognized late this spring for being named SGA Decatur Senator of the Year.

The awards took place in the House and Senate Salons of Georgia State University Student Center East at the downtown Atlanta Campus, alongside an induction ceremony for incoming members of the SGA for the 2017-18 school year.

The SGA is the official voice of the student body at Georgia State University. The primary purpose of the SGA is to represent the students' interests to university leadership and to lobby on students' behalf. The SGA provides a conduit for students to influence how the university operates by dealing directly with Georgia State staff and faculty. Additionally, the SGA selects 10 individuals who represent the students in the University Senate as voting members.

SGA members serve on different university committees which impact aspects of student life, such as the Student Life and Development Committee and the Student Activity Fee Committee, along with other committees dealing with university governance.
