Georgia State Honors College Student Talitha Hanks Awarded the Freeman Award for Study in Asia

Talitha Hanks, a sophomore from Snellville, Georgia studying sociology at Georgia State University, is one of around 400 American undergraduate students from across the U.S. selected to receive the prestigious Freeman Award for Study in Asia Scholarship (Freeman-ASIA).

The Freeman-ASIA scholarship may be used to cover the costs of study abroad programs and related expenses including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books and more. Kim will utilize the scholarship to participate in a semester-long exchange with the Ewha Women's University in Seoul, South Korea.

Hanks shared, "The Honors College played a huge role in my receiving the Freeman. I received so much support from the national scholarship and fellowship advising team - from calming my nerves to helping me review my statement they were there every step." Hanks continued, "I am so excited about the opportunity to spend the semester in Seoul and immersing myself in the Korean culture. I am working towards becoming an occupational therapist and hope to work with North Korean refugees so this ties in perfectly with my career goals."

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. The programs' goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures.

Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses or communities to encourage study abroad by others and fulfill the program's goal of increasing understanding of Asia in the United States.
