Georgia State Honors College Student Julie Kim Awarded the Freeman Awards for Study in Asia

Julie Kim of ALPHARETTA, Georgia, a senior studying psychology at Georgia State University, is one of around 400 American undergraduate students from across the U.S. selected to receive the prestigious Freeman Awards for Study in Asia Scholarship (Freeman-ASIA).

The Freeman-ASIA scholarship may be used to cover the costs of study abroad programs and related expenses including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books and more. Kim will utilize the scholarship to participate in the Hanyang University exchange program in Seoul, South Korea.

Kim shared, "I am so grateful to the Honors College not only for presenting these opportunities to me, but also for the support I received throughout my application process. I not only received encouragement, but also tangible feedback." She continued, "As a Korean-American I am thrilled to be able to travel to Seoul and experience a part of my identity that I have not been able to yet access. At this part of my life, I will finally be able to understand and gain a new perspective of who I am and where I came from."

"My advice to students applying for national scholarships is be true to yourself and authentic. Make sure that you not only talk about your goals, but who you are and how that ties into your future academic and personal endeavors."

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. The programs' goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures.

Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses or communities to encourage study abroad by others and fulfill the program's goal of increasing understanding of Asia in the United States.
