2017 Mar 8

D'Marcus Simonds, of Gainesville, a Georgia State University Panther men's basketball athlete, earned Sun Belt Freshman of the Year honors this March, becoming just the second freshman in the history of Georgia State's program to earn such honors.

Simonds joins R.J. Hunter as the only players in school history to earn conference freshman of the year honors. He enters the postseason averaging 13.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 56.1 percent from the floor.

He has swiped a team-high 34 steals and is third on the team with 52 assists. He was named College Sports Madness National Mid-Major Player of the Week on Jan. 30, and a day later garnered Sun Belt Player of the Week recognition. Earlier this year he was named tournament MVP of the Cancun Challenge after scoring a career-high 26 points against NJIT.
