BFA Sara Santamaria Interviews & Solo Exhibtion

2017 Jun 26

Sara Santamaria's first solo exhibition, "Who comes today and stays tomorrow," opened in June at Eyedrum Art & Music Gallery. It is comprised of sculptural works that address the idea of immigration and tap into themes of memoir, displacement, and identity.

For many people today who are displaced because of various social, political, or personal reasons, the concept of home is probably best recognized as a sense of being between places, instead of being rooted in one particular place and one unique identity. "Who comes today and stays tomorrow" explores the aspects of dislocation and adaptation generated by the difficult decision to uproot oneself and cross borders in search of a new home.

Mobility implies self-redefinition in relation to the place of arrival. By revisiting childhood memories from a position of displacement, the artist navigates the divisions between homelessness and origin, dislocation and belonging, culture and place.

Santamaria has been featured in a number of publications across the city, including CommonCreativ Atlanta and ArtsATL. In her interviews, she discusses her art practice, her transition to Atlanta, and Brutal Studio, the all-female design-and-build artist collective.
